SUMMARY:Demographics and Destiny: How Demographic Trends are Reshaping Florida and the United States
DESCRIPTION:As the third largest state in the nation, Florida faces numerous challenges in meeting the demands of its residents. The state’s population is forecast to increase on average annually by more than 305,000 between 2020 and 2025 and by more than 255,000 between 2025 and 2030. Of significance is the how the state’s demographics are expected to change during this period, with 1 in 4 Floridians expected to be listed as elderly. Of equal significance is the anticipated change in household size and composition, where forecasters project an increased number of households with no children. These and other changes in the state’s demographics will create new challenges for counties as it relates to housing, infrastructure, healthcare, and the environment. How Florida balances these issues in the future will depend in larger part how counties prepare themselves for the next generation. Dr. Chapin, Dean of Social Sciences at Florida State University, is a leading expert on these issues and will offer insights on what counties can anticipate with the 2020 US census count underway.\n
