The third largest state in the country by total population, Florida also had the third largest total veteran population among all U.S. states in 2016 at 1,559,778, just behind California and Texas. However, Florida has a larger share of its total population represented by veterans compared to California and Texas, with 7.6 percent of its residents in 2016 having prior served in the military, compared to 4.0 percent for California and 5.6 percent for Texas.
